Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Sophie's about 5'2" on a good day, and bordering on underweight. She's more bone and sinew than her icons would indicate, with the sort of muscles one sees on martial artists or ballet dancers, or that ranginess that sometimes happens in long-distance runners.
2. How old is she?
17 years old.
3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
She tends toward good posture when standing, exaggeratedly so when she's not at ease. When she's comfortable she relaxes a bit, and she likes to sit pretzeled up or sprawled over the furniture.
4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
She could probably use some more weight on her frame, but Sophie is in very good shape. She has swordsman's callouses, and her feet are tough enough that she is capable of going barefoot in most situations. She has a large, fairly fresh scar across her chest that looks like she was clawed or slashed very thoroughly, but otherwise she's pretty unmarked.
If Sophie is cut, she doesn't bleed normal red blood. Instead, she bleeds a pearly black ichor with threads of red and blue and gold throughout. This is not something she likes to show off, and while it doesn't grant HER any special abilities, the stuff she bleeds has definite power alignments. (red=hell/hate/badness, blue=life/harmony, gold=miracles and deadness, black=...depression, kinda? cold, slow, apathetic). These are physical manifestations of life/death force taints in her body, but she can't do anything with them without her shapeshifting abilities. Red and black can taint her perspective, however.
5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Sophie moves very fluidly in general. She tends to either be very still (especially when tense or practicing extra emotional restraint) or constantly in motion (handwringing is a nervous habit, for example).
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
All the Gargamels are attractive, excepting their father! Sophie has unusually pale blue eyes, long dark hair, and a pretty good bone structure.
Sophie has a very accurate understanding of her physical appearance, being a shapeshifter. She knows herself down to freckles and eyelashes. But she doesn't perceive herself as being pretty.
7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Sophie is naturally pale, but she's spent a lot of time outdoors, so she's got a bit of a tan. Other than the big obvious scar on her chest, her skin is pretty clear.
8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
Long (more like waist length than her icons indicate), dark brown, straight. She usually wears it either down or braided/knotted back to keep it out of her way.
9. What color are her eyes?
Very pale blue-grey. Her twin sister's eyes are described as being 'windowpane blue'.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Since she's not a shapeshifter anymore, not really!
11. What are her chief tension centers?
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
Very utilitarian. She tends toward neutrals or earth tones, and came to Asgard wearing something like robes over wide-legged trousers and an under-shirt. Her clothes are easy to move in and cover up most of her body.
If she gets to choose more modern clothing, she's likely to choose long skirts or loose pants, and flowing blouses. Freedom of motion is more important than style.
13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
Clothes aren't really that important to Sophie. She'd likely choose clothes that tend toward being a bit large/loose instead of tailored, with the exception of formal clothes.
14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences?
If/when she gets a job, she'll dress appropriately to whatever it is she's doing, but in general she prefers plain clothes to fancy ones.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Commando until someone introduces her to panties.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
She's a definite alto, on the lower-pitched side of feminine. Her accent parses as almost-but-not-quite British, and there's a lilt to her speech.
2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
Sophie tends to speak softly and evenly, and it usually sounds as though she's choosing her words carefully. It's very obvious when she's thrown off-guard, because she'll just blurt something out.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
Almost-but-not-quite-Britishness. Her canon is vaguely located somewhere from the 13th to 16th centuries in Europe, but also plays quite fast and loose with language. She would sound Other to a modern person and possibly familiar but not local to, say, a member of the Merlin cast.
4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
Canon isn't exactly helpful on this! Her native language is probably English, she also probably knows some church-y Latin, and who knows otherwise.
5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Unlikely.
6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
Sophie is occasionally good for a monologue, but in general she chooses her words.
7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Not inarticulate so much as that she often chooses not to articulate. When she tries, she can be quite eloquent. Encountering her twin sister totally ruins all that eloquence and articulation.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
Sophie is likely well-educated for being female and of her era. Her etiquette is good, she's literate, and has some pretty exceptional bodily-kinesthetic skills. She's survival smart and has a lot of practical life experience in some areas, but her experience with people is pretty limited. She has a fairly high EQ and can read body language well, but is awkward about what to do with that information. Technology is entirely beyond her, although she's passably familiar with her world's magic system.
2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
Action-wise, she thinks on her feet. Emotionally, she's much less sure of herself.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Sophie's logic is often special Gargamel-style logic. Considering her life experiences, she's logical, but that logic doesn't necessarily translate well. Her idealism strikes at strange moments but in general she's a practical sort.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Her father is a very powerful sorcerer who serves Prester John's court and her older siblings definitely had suitors, so his children are likely to have had some education. She can read and write, least halfassedly knows some basic 'feminine' skills (sewing, cooking, etc), and has definitely had combat training. She's got a religious/magic education that fits the mechanics of her world.
5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
Sophie wants to know more about everything, really. Once her life isn't focused on survival she'll be a very curious person.
6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert. She's the type to have a few close, valued friendships, and large crowds are frightening.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
At least initially she's likely to be pretty melancholic. Considering her life situation she's very even- and good-tempered. She's laid-back in matters not relating to her survival or her twin.
8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
New people and some new situations are likely to be met with reserve and wariness. Sophie is a person who is used to being in danger and constantly threatened, and she'll be feeling very powerless in Asgard and thus more cautious.
9. Is she more likely to act, or to react?
React, unless it's something she really wants or regarding her twin.
10. Which is her default: fight or flight?
Definitely depends on the situation. Most likely, dodge until pushed, and then fight if it's a willpower/autonomy issue or flight if she's feeling entirely outmatched.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Jokes, gallows humor and sarcasm are very much her speed. Her personal sense of humor is more subtle but she appreciates more obvious humor from others. Clever pranks are funny, toilet humor less so.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
Probably! PTSD is the most likely candidate. She's been pretty excessively traumatized in her life, and tends to be a bit twitchy, has trouble sleeping, has a real issue with being restrained, very low sense of self-worth, etc. She just soldiers on.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
This question would need its own post to answer properly.
14. What does she fear?
The Devil, being hated by her family, giving in to her sister.
15. What are her hopes or aspirations?
She wants to be her own person.
16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
She won't necessarily be super forthcoming about the soul thing, and definitely not about her experiences with the Devil.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
Her mother died when she was about a year old, she doesn't remember her at all. Sophie loves her father, and out of all the Gargamels it's the most obvious that their father loves her. That said, Daddy isn't exactly kept up to date with the happenings in Sophie's life by any means.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Lots! There are seven Gargamel children in total: Violet, Francescu, Manfred, Tomas, Christine, Sophie and Elisabet. Her relationship with her siblings is...sometimes tumultuous. She gets on well with Manfred, trusted Francescu until he refused to help her fight the Devil. Everyone loves Violet and nobody likes Tomas. Christine is Sophie's twin, and she's the one with their soul. Their relationship is awful--Christine views Sophie as being the 'evil twin', and their constant fighting as children became actual murder attempts once they were old enough to figure out how to do that kind of thing.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand?
Nope.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them?
Also nope. There's no one in UL that isn't a blood relative.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
She doesn't have one.
6. Does she have other close friends?
No, only family.
7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
Sophie's relationships with her family are mostly cordial, despite the fact that it's implied that most of them have either tried to or considered killing her. She has little to no experience with people who aren't her siblings, though.
8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends?
Family is always likely to trump.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once?
Single, and believes herself unlikely to ever marry.
10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
No.
11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
12. What does she look for in a romantic partner?
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
No and I doubt it's entered her mind as a possibility.
14. Does she have any rivals or enemies?
The Devil and her twin.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the Kinsey scale?
Canon has nothing to say on this point. Sophie is a shapeshifter and the statements she makes about love in canon aren't gendered. I place her in the dead center of the Kinsey scale. No gender preference. She hasn't considered romance as a thing what could happen to her. Love is for other people.
16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her?
Sophie hasn't had any consensual sex.
17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does she fit type?
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life?
Sophie isn't religious in the faith sense--she knows for a fact that God and the Devil are real, and has had very up close and personal encounters with the Devil.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
Being soulless, Sophie's moral compass is...not really there! She's been taught by her family what is 'good' and 'bad' but that can easily get skewed in the Gargamel fashion. Sophie tends to be kind to people not her twin, but she is not actually capable of sin or grace and is not actually 'good'.
4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Sophie is tolerant to beliefs that don't involve trying to kill or control her.
5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them?
Most of her prejudices are against her twin, and they're pretty rational in that Christine has tried to kill her quite a bit and also completely (possibly willfully, possibly not) misunderstands what Sophie is. She's also afraid of both angels and demons, in equal measure. They're the same to her. She also expects people to be prejudiced against her for the soulless thing.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Her father is an all-powerful sorcerer, but Sophie herself seems to have neither a home of her own nor belongings. She is essentially living in poverty, though her family isn't poor and she wouldn't actually consider herself poor.
2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her?
3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others?
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on?
5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else?
6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time?
7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is her favorite:
1. Color? green and grey
2. Smell? forest, rain, wood fire
3. Time of day? her favorite is dawn, my association is gloaming.
4. Season? autumn
5. Book? none
6. Music? ask me for an fst sometime
7. Place? forest
8. Substance?
9. Plant? trees
10. Animal? all of them. at once.
